Characteristics of Victims of Elder Abuse & Neglect in Daegu Area

Abstract
The main purposes of this study are to describe the elder abuse and neglect and to explore characteristics of the victims of elder abuse and neglect in Daegu Area. In this study, 600 interviewees had been selected as a sample. A face to face interview was conducted by the trained interviewers. For the statistical analysis, finally 508 cases were used. Findings of this study are as follows: Approximately 30 percent of the interviewees answer that they experience the elder abuse and neglect. Among the types of elder abuse and neglect, verbal and emotional abuse is the highest(45.2%), and neglect(38.0%), physical abuse(8.3%), economic exploitation(5.1%), and abandonment(3.0%) follow in this order. Among the perpetrators, the eldest son are the highest and eldest daughters of law is following the next. According to the logistics analysis, it turns out that educational attainment and living with family decrease the odds ratio of elder abuse among the elderly who are 65 and above in Daegu area and are statistically significant. On the other hand, economic difficulties and unhealthy condition increase the odds ratio of elder abuse among the elderly in Daegu Area. Finally, policy implications and some suggestions for the alleviation and improvement of the elder abuse and neglect for the elderly are introduced and discussed.
